Tax evasion is going on. Amazon heavily extended their warehouse system throughout the US eating up a big part of profits (from retail) throughout the last years. Now it is pretty much built as big as it needs to be, time to use up a chunk of the profits. Sure taxes still have to be paid, but the workers do so and keep more in their pockets as well.
