Arithmetic Symbols: The Basics
GUIDELINE Arithmetic symbols provide "short-hand" ways to represent information about numbers, their operations, and how they relate to one another.
A CLOSER LOOK
Reminder: Geometry, algebra, and other advanced mathematics use additional symbols that supplement or even replace basic arithmetic symbols. Some arithmetic symbols tell you what operation to perform, as in:
2 + 3
(Two plus three) The plus sign (+) tells you to perform the addition operation to find the sum of 2 and 3.
Other arithmetic symbols show the relationship between numbers or sets of numbers, as in:
2 + 3 = 5
(Two plus three equals five.) The equal sign (=) shows that the sum 2 + 3 and the number 5 are equal in value. That is, they share a relationship of equivalence
EXAMPLES AND SPECIFICS SYMBOL MEANS FUNCTION REPRESENTED
+ "plus" Addition operation
− "minus" Subtraction operation
× "times" Multiplication operation
÷ "divided by" Division operation
= "equals" Relationship of equivalence
≠ "not equal to" Relationship of non-equivalence
< "less than" Relationship of inequality
≤ "less than or equal to "Relationship of inequality
> "greater than "Relationship of inequality
≥ "greater than or equal to "Relationship of inequality
≈ "approximately equal to" Relationship of near equality
( ) "the quantity" Relationship of priority
% "percent" Relationship to 100
