Plastic means the backpane of the screen, not the front of the device.

It is a big deal, because traditional e-ink displays are quite fragile, because the manufacturing technology requires the use of a thin plate of glass as a substrate for the display. And when you twist the frame, or drop something on display or apply a pressure it can easily crack.
