The
EPUB 3 Core Media Types specification calls out the following specification for OpenType:
ISO/IEC 14496-22:2009 - Information technology -- Coding of audio-visual objects -- Part 22: Open Font Format.
This is the ISO's version of the OpenType specification from 2009. It significantly pre-dates font variations that were introduced in
Microsoft's OpenType version 1.8 in 2016.
I would say that embedding a font in an EPUB that does not comply with the 2009 specification would result in a non-compliant EPUB. It might be handled by some e-readers, but certainly not by all.
