Thanking the lord for small mercies.
Went trawling on the 'net' for a recipe for butternut squash in a soup.
Entering a site, I noticed a screenful of recipes, but the whole layout was in text - funny...
Then within 20 seconds I was getting virus/trogan alerts on the page, telling me I was infected and i HAD to download a program from Norton to clear the problem.
It was in a loop - cancel went back to the 'please download a program' - trying to exit the web page gave me 'your PC is infected please download software from Norton'...
All very believeable ....
Finally, after 5 minutes of this loop, I managed to close down the browser.
Running a deep scan with NIS has brought up nothing ....
But it's easy to see how things could catch the unwary out .....
