If the kobo clara hd has an out of the box kobo provided setting to have a black background, then for all I know kobo is using the same or similar technology as amazon and might well look just as good. The Oasis black isn't that black, but it is nearly ghosting free.

The Oasis has the least e-ink ghosting I have seen and its black background is OKish. Just about any other display technology is going to have better solid black. If your samsung phone is OLED, nothing else's black background is going to be anywhere near it unless it is also OLED.
