The reading vision change was probably gradual so you adjusted to it for a while until it got too bad.
RE what you posted earlier about cooking - I'm not much of a cook, but I have found my computer glasses are good for seeing things on the kitchen counters or stovetop. If only I could blame my poor cooking skills on my vision.....
