Whether or not the reader is easier to hold with or without a case depends on the size/shape of the person's hands and the size/shape of the specific device.

When I had a reader with an easily removable case I took it off when reading at home because I found the reader more comfortable to hold without the case. I was usually reading on a soft couch or bed next to a carpeted floor so risk of drop damage was minimal. (I did put the case on when taking the reader elsewhere.)

The only damage occurred when something fell on the screen from above while I was reading.
