Yes, but confusingly , when you look at device details\about it used some other numbering system. Amazon at that time had not adopted the fire os 3 4 5 6 system
I agree that it is fire 3 , android 4.0.3 and I found confirmation at other sources when I was researching mine.
I doubt there is any way to add a more modern android version, even via rooting
