For the first time in a long time we can write for the sheer pleasure and send it out there into the wild-blue and see what happens. We can forge one-on-one relationships with readers, bypassing all the mess of the traditional system.
Or you can make people notice your books. When the trilogy "Legends of Dune" came out, the authors published 3 short stories too. One before each book in the trilogy. You could download these short stories free from their website (which, naturally, also contained links to their other books). Voila, free advertisement! (say a book is free, and you'll get lots of readers, suddenly ) And people will become curious about the "real" books and, hopefully, buy them.

But then, all their books are available in e-book format, so they have embraced the new technology.
