With Play Store & all, I think we're dealing with two sets of firmware - a Chinese version and an international one. The international one lacks Play Store so far, though we've been promised an update this month that will include Play Store.
One thing that could be tried in the meantime: change your language to Chinese, see if you get the Play Store update, and then change back to English! I'll wait, but it could be worth a try.
Some of what Johann Cat says, I see in my device. With other things, I wonder if he had a defective device. I have not yet tried an alternate launcher. That's on my to-do list.
