The oldest elephant (the matriarch in the herd) in our local zoo had to be put down after she had fallen down the moat surrounding the elephant enclosure. (I don't know exactly how, only that the fall was caused by the play of two young males).
She was 42 years old and bought free from a workcamp in Thailand. She will be missed by the regular visitors of the Zoo.
