"Reacted", not "over-reacted". As Ricky says, it's understandable, and anyone "overprotective" of you has our vote.
(Me and a mate once crossed into the US from Vancouver, and the American friend we were with, when asked how she knew us, instinctively knew that "I met them on the internet" was NOT the right answer for the crossing guard.
