In addition, very many PDF are really images in a PDF wrapper. That can't reflow. If it's really text, then you can use suitable tools to export the text (easier by default in Linux) and use something such as Calibre to make an ePub. Calibre will claim to convert PDFs, but if they are just images, then you get epubs that are simply containers for images.
You can export the images and use OCR tools (results depend on quality of original scan in the PDF envelope).
Some searchable PDFs are scanned images with then an invisible text layer created by OCR, exporting that text usually reveals how poor the OCR was and that there was no proofing.
I got a Kindle DX originally to read old scanned magazines and books as PDFs. It was OK (but very slow) for the books but useless for the magazines as they are usually Letter or A4 or similar size and multicolumn. The higher resolution original H2O is better despite smaller screen, but still useless for the old magazines, or indeed new ones only in scanned to PDF format. The answer would seem to be the very large Sony digital paper devices optimised for PDF, that don't really work as ebook readers. Or maybe a 12" tablet with better than HD. A 10" HD (1920 x 1080) tablet isn't really good enough either.
