There are 7 books in the "Clubfoot" series of secret agent action novels, featuring Dr Grundt, an agent of the German government as the "baddie". The first appeared in 1918 with Dr Grundt an agent of the German Kaiser around the outbreak of WW1, and concluding in 1944 with Dr Grundt an agent of the Nazis. The titles are:

In this novel, in the last days of peace before WW1 breaks out, a young English woman working in Germany becomes entangled in a British secret agent operation, and encounters the terrifying Dr Grundt, head of German counter-intelligence: the "crouching beast" of the title.
