It may be that I look upon covers as important because physical books have always had such a prominent and important position in my home. As a child it was always "make sure you wash your hands first", and "be careful with that book", through to now and what amounts to a library that takes up a sizeable part of our home - book covers are effectively part of the decor. So I've gotten used to looking at book covers and appreciating the work that went into them.

Which brings up another bugbear of mine: the cheap clip-art covers being put on so many books these days - the fall of civilisation as I knew it!
