Not sure, I think the collections pane is there only when there is a book in the collection in READING status. I've noticed that even with a collection with 60 unread books in it, if I finish the last partially read book, it'll drop that collection and bring up another one.
Not 100% sure that is what is triggering it, and only if I finish it within the book or something...
