Well, I decided to get a brand new cord... Never been used in anything... and what do you know... The brand new cord fits snugly and works perfectly. And has now been marked as the "Kobo cord", to only be used with the Kobo, and nobody can touch it for anything else...

I second that. Not all usb cables have the same thickness at the actual bit that s!ots into the device. So for a given device, one cable can be loose and a different one can be snug. Not a kobo specific issue either. I don't buy super expensive cables so I bin anything that seems unreliable. As well as the thickness issue there is sometimes an issue of how far into the port will the cable go. I once had a kobo tablet which did not play nice with some cables because they would not slide in deeply enough
I can't speak to specific brands as no cable makers seem to actually print any branding onto the cable. So once you have a drawer full it is hard to know the origin of each one. Amazon sell allegedly fast cables to Go with their fast chargers, but it is a plain black sheath. No go fast stripes or clues as to it being super fast and super expensive, and I strongly suspect it's a marketing con
