Fjtorres' time line is somewhat off. In 1997, a lot of what fjtorres points to didn't exist and wasn't a thing. Now, if the article was dated 5 years later, he might have a point. In 1997, Netscape had 86% of the web browser market while Sun and SGI were kings of the web servers and Sun was just starting to push java. I was running the company web site on a SGI indigo.
