Whenever I've done a factory reset, any books on the internal storage, which is all the KA1 has, have been deleted and the database has no books imported.

I am using the Gui reset in the settings for "factory reset". From your statement, it looks like the GUI "factory reset" is not a true reset. Will have to check out the manual factory reset after finishing reading my current book.
After the fake GUI factory reset, I still have to go thru the setup like after unboxing with selecting the language, getting wifi setup, logging to the account, waiting for firmware updating, seeing a dialog about searching wifi network to join(?) then some other stuff & a dialogue claiming my Overdrive book has expired. The part about Overdrive book expiring is different from after unboxing as I think that the msg was that the library will expire in 2 days.
So is it "safe" to delete the SQLite before doing the factory reset? Also saw 2 sqlites in .kobo, koreader & book; the book.sqlite is much smaller than the koreader.lite which I think is for all the books?
Don't remember if stated, but the "removed" book were removed prior to doing the factory reset. The side-load of books did not include the "removed book" which makes it curious where the ghost book came from and/or that the sqlite did not get reestablished with the re-loading of the books after the "factory reset".
