I think the colours plus the ability to collapse/uncollapse each patch have been one of yaml's main selling points for me.

I have a yaml-mode for Emacs that does syntax highlighting, it is fairly basic compared to other modes, but it is all I really need.
It is just a matter of time I think. I have no problem reading the output from objdump now that I have been doing it for years, but it looked like yaml to me when I first saw it.
