It was an automatic update that killed the KP.

Try contacting Amazon again. Explain the situation again (S-L-O-W-L-Y if you have to) and see if you can get someone with a little more common sense this time. I doubt this happens very often, they should look at it as an exception and make and make an exception to their normal procedure by replacing your Kindle with a like refurbished one.
