I think you should keep using your tablet for magazines and heavily illustrated PDF:s. As you seem to consider. And just get a nice e-ink device to read pure text like novels. That is the way I went, and it seems to work fine.

Yes, a good e-ink device is much easier on the eyes than a normal tablet. Not quite as good paper but good enough for extended reading. I think my Bouye Likebook Plus is big and good enough. 7.8" and 300 ppi. But there are many other options.

And learn to love calibre, that will make your reading much easier...
