It's really too bad because I use to find a number of authors that way." i.e. it's a shame because at one time I did find recommendations by Amazon useful, i.e. before they started selling recommendation slots.

Based on the fact that all the recommendations are KU books now, I would say that all the slots are either likely payola, or that Amazon is just trying to pimp the KU books to increase their subscriptions. Neither is particularly appealing, nor useful to me personally.
