Both Kobo and Nook can read any DRM-free ePub that has been sideloaded to it. So can a Kindle, if you shift the format.
For the most part, I don't find any ereader to be tied to a single vendor. Hence any statement that an ereader is tied to single vendor is, IMHO, odd.
