Having said all that, why would you find my initial statement (post #7: Kobo is just as tied in to a single vendor as a Kindle or a Nook) odd?

Both Kobo and Nook can read any DRM-free ePub that has been sideloaded to it. So can a Kindle, if you shift the format.
