Perhaps a bit of self-hypnosis? I know that I can pick up a book and the next thing I know it's several hours later. Sometimes I also get where I have to put the book down for a few minutes when something exciting happens. I think it shows that the author knows his/her craft since they sneak up on us with an increase in the drama of the story.
