The issue isn't likely to be related to the auto sleep/wake function indeed, but davidfor describes something other than that related to the case (and so did I in one of the other threads you posted in). So you can't be sure it's not the case. Especially since it as an AliExpress thing. And I agree with you, two bad batteries in a row would be quite a coincidence. So apart from following the tips you've received (factory reset, full charge, read one free kepub with nothing else on the device), I would also take your device out of its case.
