That is correct. Basically, kepub is a minor variant on epub.
Sounds very good. Basically, use the ereader, get used to it and then decide if you want to use alternate software, patch the firmware, etc. Some people want to make changes, others are happy with the factory setup. It's very nice to have the choice.
