Doesn't require searching, but can be populated with urls that a user can just jump to.
Mobilreads, Calibre Bugs, Wikipedia, Goodreads, Amazon, a blog page, facebook, Calibre PDF, Author websites, etc.

Why not just use the book marks in your browser? Or do you mean to get to a page specific to a book. And that is what the identifiers do. And you can set a URL for authors. And there is a Search the Internet plugin.

Have a look at the Open With plugin.

But the question is what to do with them. I assumed you wanted to put them in a book. But, what BR said makes more sense and using an existing tool such as he suggested is the way to do this.

A "test program" can confirm it works before setting it. I have Directory Opus and am able to populate a menu-bar this way. Dragging the .exe files to it and having the edit button dialog pop up. Also being able to select a file path to the program icon.

Look at the Open With plugin. And calibre has its own Open With function.
@Rellwood: When you make a suggestion, you need to give details of what you want to do or want to achieve. Of these suggestions, only the last comes anywhere near giving me an idea of what you actually want. Or why it is needed in calibre rather than some external tool.
