There's no prep at all and no "set" time for me for reading, just pick up where you left off, and start a new book when that one ends. Reading for long periods at a time has more to do with how interesting you find the book.

Omnibus editions are good for long reads. And sometimes I switch from one book to another depending on my mood, then go back to the 1st book later.
