I also prefer silence when reading. It's very hard if not impossible to read with other distractions around. Of course once I focus on reading hrs can go by before I think to look at the clock and see what time it is. I had that problem in High School. I'd read during study hall period, then have to remind myself to look up so I didn't miss hearing the bell.
