I think the article explains that existing connections aren't terminated. However, you cannot connect new devices to the Play Store anymore if they don't meet the requirements (and the Boox line of ereaders doesn't).
That means that you're restricted to sideloading which is inconvenient (you don't get updates automatically) and can prevent you from using certain paid-for apps.
