If his characters remain "in type" and true to Irving's vision, whether they are misogynistic or not does not mean the author necessarily shares those same beliefs.

Yes. And I hope that's what others took it to mean when I said "honest". Perhaps "believable" would have been a better choice.
It's true too, it's always a risk to accuse an author of their characters' attributes (I mean, no-one seriously thinks Dan Brown himself is a depthless, poorly-drawn, vacuous cardboard-cutout, do they?

), though I admit that being in the same group as the subject of some fictional prejudice "honestly" presented in a novel's protagonist can be a somewhat disturbing, and separation can be difficult.
