I had figured it out just before your post - but it was good to know that my guess was good!

So, I overwrote the correct device.lua, I hope - (koreader/frontend/device/kindle/device.lua)

KOReader still works fine when I begin in "right side up" mode. But no change when I begin in "upside down" mode (buttons to the left). Same problems as before.
