Strictly speaking, reading glasses don't magnify the text. What they do is to compensate for age-related focusing problems due to the loss of elasticity of the lens inside the eye. This loss of elasticity results in a decrease in the ability to focus at multiple distances. In most cases, this decrease shows as blurry vision at close distances. Do a search on
presbyopia for more information.
As for sleep patterns, I've used a nice hot cup of coffee as part of my relaxing before going to bed for decades.
