Scientific papers are usually close to A4/Letter-size i.e. with 20-21.5 cm page width and with the text proper (without margins) at 17-18 cm width .

Since 9.7" 150 dpi screens are over 20 cm wide in landscape, and 10.3" 227 dpi screen is about 21 cm, with margins cropped there is a considerable magnification available compared to a paper document.

So, two-column scientific papers can be comfortably read on 10" screen either in portraite (using zooming or two-column mode) or landscape mode, whereas one-column papers only in landscape mode (with or without margins), using two or more screens per page.

Of course, if our reader supports it, we can also use pdf reflow mode.
