I appreciate all the suggestions, but so far none look ideal. I am pretty sure that my friend doesn't have an Amazon account. He lives in the UK while I'm in France: I'll be seeing him at his 70th birthday party but the following day he and I will probably not be in the mood for doing anything too tech-y.
He does have internet access.
Is it possible to set up a disposable Amazon account with a newly created gmail address? - just to activate the Kindle .... or does everything "Amazon" have to be linked to a live credit card?
