Epson Broadsheet Product Brief

It seems likely that all new EInk devices will use the Epson Broadsheet controller (like the Sony PRS-700 and Kindle 2). The 2-page PDF product brief is here.

Highlights include:
  • multi-regional and concurrent display updates resulting in highly responsive screen changes
  • Maximum display size: 2048x1536 @ 50Hz
  • 5-bit greyscale
  • Host Writes can be rotated counter-clockwise by 90°, 180°, or 270°
Vizplex screens are limited to 4-bit (16-way) greyscale I think. A 9.7" Vizplex screen is "only" 1280x825, so there is head room for larger screens.

The rotation option should make it almost trivial to implement a device that accommodates left and right hand operation.
