FWIW, the main difference between the Kindle basic 7 and current Kindle Basic 8 is that it is slightly heavier and thicker. Kindle 7 also does not have bluetooth to enable whispersync playback or text-to-speech. Otherwise, they have the same software. Neither has a light.

Edited to add: Kindle 8 also has voiceview to enable blind users to use the unit. I forgot since I don't use this feature (yet).
