+1 on the need for ongoing updates/support for Onyx devices. The Note firmware, in theory, could be supported/updated for some time to come. There's no reason I know of why the Note couldn't run Nougat or Oreo, for example. It would be easier to recommend Onyx if they did offer long-term support/updates to ALL their devices!
