I did find this site with downloads of earlier versions. I used this version when I downloaded the unencrypted mp3 files.
I have no idea why the app didn't automatically update--I don't know where the setting is to keep it from doing so. But it's on a phone on which wifi is turned off unless I'm actually downloading something.

Assuming you installed originally from the Google Play app, then you can turn off automatic updates for just the Kobo app in Google Play.
