No, that is the procedure to perform any firmware update.
For 'root directory' is simply meant "that location without a parent location", and in the case of the Onyx device it is "the 'Local storage' location (as opposed to any of its subdirectories)". The filesystem is a tree-shaped structure - any node can contain other many other nodes -, so that node which contains but is not contained is the "root".

And if you could impersonate the "root user", you would have access to the whole tree - hence your confusion.
