If you display side-by-side you don't need to make a copy, but then each page is only displayed in A5, or half size.
If you want full size, and easily switch back-and-forth between two pages of the same document, then you can either add annotations to the pages you want to visit, and then use the search (if you make stars) or annotation list to jump back and forth.
Another option is to have twice the same document, and since the RP1 remembers the last page seen when opening a document, one can be opened on where you are reading, and the other on the references.
I usually use annotations, since it is so easy to just draw a line, and be able to jump back.
