However, my question was not described properly to begin with. I am using the plug-in FanFicFare, which has the ability to populate user columns automatically. It does not, however, remove those tags from the 'Tag' column. For example, I have created a column 'Characters', which is automatically populated but the characters are still in the 'Tags' column. is there any easy way to eliminate duplicate tags across columns?
I can't immediately think of how to do that, but, I think you should be able to prevent this with FFF. There is per-site configuration that change what is treated as a tag. I think the default is pretty much everything, but I'd suggest asking in the FFF thread for help with the configuration so that the characters don't go into the tags column.
