Why I was trying to convert that acsm file
Ok from reading around this forum I now understand that acsm files are DRM'd. I am finding calibre a fairly steep learning curve and while my medium term goal is to de-DRM my vast Kindle library, I thought I would
1 Download some obviously free stuff
2 Transfer across some non-DRM books from Kindle
3 Buy a book from eBooks and transfer it across
1 DONE - eg out of copyright plain text stuff like Great Expectations
2 DONE - I successfully brought a free edition of Aesops Fables across from Amazon to Calibre. It may be that I was just lucky - I picked this book because it seemed to be the right file type but this approach has not subsequently worked on other the Kindle books I have tried.
3 The book I tried to bring across from eBooks is green DRM according to calibre, so I thought I would be able to open it, but it is an acsm file so, if I am getting this right, necessarily DRM'd.
I suppose my next step will have to be attempting to de-DRM. Looks pretty complicated...
