The acsm file is basically a token for the book. You need to use Adobe Digital Edition (ADE) to open to acsm file, which in turn will download the actual ebook.

You will probably find instructions at the bookstore where you acquired the books as to how to install ADE. Do make sure to setup an ADE account.
