Bookworm_Girl and astrangerhere, I was intrigued by your posts on Jane Austen in relationship to The Vicar of Wakefield.

There is a phrase in The Vicar of Wakefield:
"and to assist at tattering a kip, as the phrase was, when we had a mind for a frolic." That basically means trashing a bordello, which made me wonder who the contemporary readers were. Jane Austen would have been reading it a bit later, of course.
