Still the languages were different in my case.
But because of course I cannot doubt what you are saying, I checked again, and I now see the error was on my part.
I had two folders for my portable installation, and I was not running the viewer from the same folder as I run Calibre itself.
Silly me. Sorry for wasting your time.
