This really isn't a tablet vs. ereader question. You aren't interested in an ereader, just a tablet. You might want to change your title to reflect that. Ereaders are made quite differently from tablets.
As to types, depends on your needs. Make a list of what you NEED it to do as well as a WANT list. That will help you eliminate those devices that don't meet your needs.
FWIW, I do all my reading, except pdfs and magazines, on ereaders. I use tablets for a lot of internet searching and reading. I have multiple FIRE tablets because of upgrades. There is always one plugged in charging and one available for ROKU or surfing which is good because they are only good for an 8 hour charge and drain while they are sitting on the side table. I have a used Mac tablet. It turned out not to do what I really wanted, so I'm glad I didn't buy one new.
